If there is anything that can pull you away from the beautiful temples of Angkor Wat, it is the aroma of rice and Amok. Cambodia is a culinary delight for a foodie like me who can enjoy the evenings after exploring the fascinating country with a rich history and culture. One of the things that truly sets Cambodia apart from other destinations is its cuisine. Cambodian food is a delightful blend of flavours and ingredients, with influences from neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. And then there are us Indians, any curry based on coconut milk seems inspired by our Kerala curries. Here are some of the must-try dishes when visiting Cambodia.

Amok, which is also my favourite. I carried a special blend of amok spices back from my Cambodia trip. This classic Cambodian dish is a must-try for any food lover. Amok is a rich and creamy curry made with fish, coconut milk, and an array of fragrant spices such as lemongrass and galangal. The curry is steamed in a banana leaf, giving it a unique and delightful flavour. It's usually served with rice and a side of fresh vegetables, making it a satisfying and healthy meal.
My top beverage would be the Vietnamese coffee…yes, I know its from Vietnam but it is very much ha part of the coffee culture of Cambodia. The thick condensed milk poured into a dark, rich and strong coffee. This is what coffee dreams are made of.
You can also try Bai Sach Chrouk. This is a popular breakfast dish in Cambodia, and it's easy to see why. Bai Sach Chrouk is a simple yet flavourful meal made with grilled pork, rice, and pickled vegetables. The pork is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, garlic, and sugar, giving it a sweet and savoury taste that's hard to resist.
Khmer Red Curry is an easy choice. If you love spicy food, then Khmer Red Curry is a must-try dish in Cambodia. This flavourful curry is made with chicken or beef, coconut milk, and a blend of spices such as cumin, coriander, and chili. The dish is usually served with rice or noodles, and it's a hearty and satisfying meal that will leave you feeling full and happy.
Nom Banh Chok is a popular street food in Cambodia, and it's a refreshing and flavourful dish that's perfect for a hot day. It's made with thin rice noodles, fish-based gravy, and an assortment of fresh herbs and vegetables such as cucumbers, bean sprouts, and mint. The dish is light yet filling, making it a great option for lunch or a mid-day snack.
Lok Lak is a popular Cambodian dish made with beef, rice, and a tangy sauce made with lime juice, sugar, and black pepper. The beef is usually marinated in a mixture of soy sauce and oyster sauce, giving it a rich and savoury flavour. The dish is usually served with a fried egg on top, adding an extra layer of richness to the meal.
Fish Amok is a variation of the classic Amok dish mentioned earlier, but this time it's made with fish instead of chicken or beef. The fish is cooked in a curry made with coconut milk and an array of spices, giving it a unique and flavourful taste. The dish is usually served with rice and fresh vegetables, making it a healthy and satisfying meal.
Lastly for the brave, there is the deep fried frog in the local eateries of the capital cities. Head to the local makeshift food courts serving local delicacies. Choose the frog if you are the curious kind. It tastes like chicken, so don’t be afraid.
I had an amazing time trying out these dishes and when I was not having a meal, my favourite snack was the charcoal roasted bananas on a skewer. Yummmmmmmmmmmmm…..
