Safety tips for solo women travelers in India

Traveling is an adventure in itself for everyone. But when it comes to traveling in India by solo women, the crime rate against women makes it a daring sport for women. From convincing and assuring family to shortlisting the best places that are safe for solo trips, women face a lot of hurdles on their way to fulfilling travel goals. Well, if you are planning your solo trip, then here are some tips that might help you ensure safety on the go.

The list is long, but you do not need to freak out. It will help you stay alert while enjoying the trip. Go through them, and the rest you will learn from your experiences on the go.

1. Take Baby steps

If you are a newbie starting solo traveling, then do not jump to a faraway travel location. Start small and visit the places near or around your city and state. Gain some experience from these trips and then plan solo trips to different cities and other far-off destinations.

2. Check reviews and testimonials before booking a hotel

Always book your hotel in advance to avoid being stranded in unknown places. Check the location properly so that your lodging is at a safe and secure place. You would not wish to lose your belongings and safety.

3. Research before you go

Before beginning the trip, do your research about the place, tourist spots, must-visit places, local eateries. Read about those places and check the common ways you could get scammed to be safe and prepared.

4. Study the routes on maps beforehand

Study the location of your destination and always keep your navigation turned on on the smartphone while driving through cities and towns. Also, keep your family and friends informed about your whereabouts. Do not let your taxi driver pick strangers on the go. Make sure it is only you and the driver.

5. Sightseeing at Day

Try to cover your sightseeing during the day, and head straight back to the hotel. Do not forget to dress appropriately, depending on the place you are visiting. You do not want eyes on you. To avoid prying creeps and any kind of mistreatment, it is advised to be back at the hotel before it's dark. When walking in the dark, try to walk close to a family.

6. Do not be afraid to seek help if you feel in danger

Try to walk confidently, as many people can smell fear and vulnerability. Do not feel threatened, and keep someone informed of your travel plans and whereabouts. Remember to carry pepper spray with you. You might have to ask strangers for directions or recommendations. But, if you feel unsafe around the stranger, then you must find a way to escape the conversation.

7. Learn tidbits of the local language

Learning a few words of the local language will help you deter miscreants. It would also help you make local friends on the trip, and they will guide you to safe locations. If a stranger asks you if you are traveling alone in the city/town, look them in the eye, and lie to their face. You do not want to give them any scope to mistreat you.

8. Be around other women

Look for an all-women hostel or dormitory for lodging. Try to sit next to a female on a bus or other public transport. Stay in touch with female-only groups on your social media, especially where the members know the place you are visiting. Read about travel groups run by women and ask them for the best guidance. Only go on trips you know you can handle alone.

9. Don’t step out with expensive belongings or a heavy bag

Carry a small backpack with you when out sightseeing. Keep only those things with you that you might need. If you face any trouble, a heavy bag will restrict you from running with the weight, and you might also lose your expensive belongings. Leaving your valuable belongings in your hotel room will be a smart choice. Also, do not keep all the money in the same place. Divide it into separate bags, and carry a nominal amount that you will need for the day out. If possible make online transactions

10. Learn the art of self-defense

In crowded places like markets, roads, or metro trains, always stay vigilant. Keep your bag on your front to avoid perverts, and keep your phone safe. Stuff it inside the bag to avoid pickpockets. And keep some self-defense tricks prepared
