Soft sided luggage or hard sided ?

Have to buy new luggage, and struggling to decide soft sided or hard sided? I like soft sided top opening because it takes less space when open but hard-sided provides better protection to contents. Anything that is a combination of the two?

Hard ones are always prone to breakage.....i would go for soft...they are anyway cheaper as well
